Rise Hall is a location very near to where I live in East Yorkshire. It is a venue I still feel has lots to offer in the way of images. It changed hands last year and I’m not sure what the new owners have in mind for its future making me wonder if it will still be available as a location to shoot in and if so at a price that’s affordable.

When we have used locations such as Rise Hall, Carton Towers and several others, they are hired by one person and then the cost is shared between the photographers. This gives access to them at a reasonable cost and results in an affordable day out with the photographers usually arranging their own models out. This will be something I hope to be involved in again just as soon as we are allowed to do so under current government guidelines.

When visiting these kinds of places its always best to do your homework first by researching on the internet to find images that show you what’s available. It’s also a good idea to see where the sun will be and to work out which rooms will have the light shining through which windows at certain times of the day. There are several apps available to help with this and these apps can also be very useful for several other areas on photography. Sun Seeker and The Photographer’s Ephemeris are two I personally use. Also go with a theme in mind whether it be a storyline, a certain time historically to suit the wardrobe you might have available or just simply a fashion-based idea. This will always make it easier to plan your shooting time and make sure you get the best out of your available time on the day.

When working in stately homes you must always respect the house rules as unfortunately in the past I’ve heard stories about photographers not doing this which has lead to many National Trust owned properties closing the doors to organised photographic shoots. This is sad as the minority has spoilt it for the majority yet again. If you need to move anything in a room, for example, furniture, always ask a member of the house first and always put it back when you have finished. The last thing the house needs is to go around sorted everything out at the end of the day.

If you would be interested in attending one of these organised events you can drop me a line or just keep an eye on the emails I send out as my subscribers will always be notified first.
